When you run out of puff, you find yourself opting for the lift instead of the stairs. Patients with chronic lung diseases therefore cut back their level of physical activity of their own accord. This reduces their muscles and also their capacity to absorb oxygen, which in turn leads to even more breathing difficulties or shortness of breath.
This vicious circle can be counteracted with targeted pulmonary physiotherapy. For this purpose, the Physiozentrum employs physiotherapists who specialise in the treatment of lung diseases at various locations. For chronic lung diseases such as COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) or asthma, pulmonary rehabilitation is an important cornerstone of such treatment. The focus is on breathing therapy, building up strength and physical condition, and coaching. Under expert guidance, the aim is to increase physical performance and thus achieve an optimal quality of life.
Even after lung surgery, including lung volume reduction or even a transplant, it is important to train the lungs again afterwards.
Since the coronavirus pandemic, we are also increasingly seeing patients who are still suffering from the long-term effects of Covid-19 (long Covid) for weeks or months, and complaining of impaired lung function. Our specialists can also help in such cases – always in consultation with the patient’s family doctor, pneumologist and any other partners, of course.
Pulmonary physiotherapy is used in:
- COPD (chronic obstructive bronchitis)
- Asthma
- Pre- or postoperatively for lung surgery
- Pulmonary fibrosis
- Respiratory distress or lung problems after infectious diseases such as Covid-19

The aims of pulmonary physiotherapy are:
- Perfect inhalation technique for the prescribed medication
- Optimisation of breathing technique at rest and under exertion
- Efficient secretion mobilisation and coughing technique
- Less dyspnoea, especially under exertion
- Early detection and timely, correct response to AECOPD (exacerbation)
- Practising action plan in close cooperation with the GP
- Motivation and guidance for regular endurance and strength training
- Strategies for coping with everyday life well and as independently as possible

Depending on the problem and therapy goals, we may carry out the following measures:
- Analysis of breathing pattern incl. auscultation
- PEP breathing (pursed lip technique)
- If necessary, use aids such as flutter, acapella etc. to mobilise secretions.
- Inhalation training
- Motivation to quit smoking or while quitting smoking
- Performance test (6-minute walk test or STS) with heart rate and oxygen saturation measurement
- Exacerbation management, with action plan if necessary
- Individual endurance training, if Spo2 < 90% with supplementary oxygen
- Individual strength training
- Self-management Everyday strategies, daily and weekly planning with exercise plan
